Introduction

Why is Urine Yellow? Have you ever asked yourself where does urine come from, or why is it yellow in color?

container of urine

Urine is a result of the blood being filtered as it passes through the kidneys. Water and cellular wastes are removed and released in the urine.

The yellow color is from what is called "urochrome." Urochrome is a yellow pigment that comes from the processing of dead blood cells in the liver. As the cells are broken down, the urochrome is released in the blood and filtered by the kidneys. That is why your urine is yellow!

Now, let's learn even more about the urinary system that acts like the sanitation department of our body by removing all the "trash" that accumulates as our cells work.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Describe the function of the urinary system.

Enduring Understandings

  • The urinary system and its structures regulate the composition and pH of all body fluids to maintain homeostasis in the body.
  • Homeostatic imbalances of the urinary system can result in diseases.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Anatomy and Physiology standard: 11
