Rational Numbers
In our universe, there are many different types of rational numbers. There are fractions, repeating decimals, terminating decimals, integers, natural numbers, whole numbers, etc. Every number in the universe has an opposite. Therefore, we will explore positive and negative rational numbers during our journey.
Rational numbers are needed because there are many units of measurement in which natural numbers or integers alone will not fully describe. Units of measurement such as length, weight, time, speed, and volume are some common uses for rational numbers.
For example, Chef Thomas needs to make 20 cakes for his boss. The recipe has lots of fractions and will only make one cake. He needs to figure out how much of each ingredient to buy in order to make 20 cakes!
